Free Cultural Works Definition

Episode 28, Interview with Benjamin Mako Hill, and in the second part of the show more from an interview I did with Wayne Mackintosh, more of which you can find in episode 25

Mako is at the center of both the world of Free Software and this expanding world of Free Culture.   He is a contributor to both the Debian and Ubuntu GNU/Linux distributions as well as to wikimedia projects and a co-author of the Free Cultural Works Definition, which we talk about in this show.

I asked Mako about how he got into Free Software, and for his perspective on how the Creative Commons has developed.   We talked about his motivations for working on the Free Cultural Works Defintion, and why it's an important initiative.

I also asked Mako about the Affero General Public License, a software license that aims to bring the freedoms expressed in the regular GPL to users of network services.

Lastly we talked about his work with the Wikimedia Foundation, and he shared some thoughts about best practices in contributing to these projects.

I orginally thought I would try to edit in my interview w/ Glyn Moody, but it just made more sense to edit in some more of the interview I did with Wayne Mackintosh, seeing as though he is also a member of the advisory board of the Wikimedia Foundation with Mako.

Wayne also talks about the Free Cultural Works Definition, and why it's an important part of the Open Educational Resouce Centre's mission.  Wayne explains how the Free Cultural Works licenses differ from the Creative Commons licenses, and why some of them are not compatiable.   We also talked about some barriers potential contributors to Free Culture and Open Education that people have and how the OER Centre addresses that.

Next week I'll get to that Glyn Moody interview, I've sort of been going through the LCA2010 keynote speakers in the order that their talks were in.
