Episode One
I wanted to open the show, and indeed the radio show itself with the Copy Wrong Song. The Creative Freedom Foundation, and the inspiring "black out" campaign, were tipping points in me actually going ahead with the idea of this show. I had already formulated a rough idea of the New It Make project in 2008, when I was trying to decide what to do with my spare time. One of the other things I decided to do, was a presenation/workshop on Open Office for not-for-profit organizations. And I did that. During the course of organizing that, I encountered Community Radio Hamilton. The idea was proposed about doing a radio show on Free/Open Source Software. And I thought, that would be great, if someone else did it. I couldn't imagine working on a radio show, that was all about Free Software.
Then the idea about doing a show on the Creative Commons was suggested by Graham, the trainer I had worked with to do the Open Office session. I liked that idea, and already had New It Make in the back of my mind. Meanwhile one of the attendees of the workshop, asked me for help to use the Hamilton Kete site. I wasn't aware of the site, and didn't think much about it, until a follow up meeting with the workshop participant the next week at the library. That was the first time I looked at the Kete site, and realized why Smita from the library was asking me about Ruby on Rails at the Software Freedom Day event in 2008. Smita connected me with Walter and Mark which led to the interview in this episode. In coordination with a presentation on Kete to the Waikato Linux Users Group, I conducted the Intervew with Mark and Walter on 27-04-2009. It was my first episode, and I really didn't know what I was doing, but I don't think it turned out half bad.
To end the show I played a Knives at Noon song, they are a band that have really embraced the Creative Commons and I like to play loud, energetic music like theirs, since my show airs at 2pm. I create the show for myself mainly, and this is the kind of music I need to hear at near 2:30 pm, when I've been sitting in front of the computer screen all day, and the afternoon doldrums start setting in.
